On January 5, Sam Altman, OpenAI’s co-founder and CEO, shared a reflective blog post marking the second anniversary of ChatGPT. He offered insights on the company’s mission toward creating artificial general intelligence (AGI)—defined as systems surpassing human intelligence—and eventually progressing to superintelligence, systems even smarter than AGI.

Among his statements, Altman impressively claimed, “We are now confident we know how to build AGI as we have traditionally understood it.” While refraining from assigning a specific timeline, Altman suggested in an interview with Bloomberg that AGI could emerge during the current U.S. president’s term, emphasizing the importance of approaching this transformative milestone with precision.

Altman’s blog also hinted that 2025 could witness AI agents entering the workforce, marking a significant shift for businesses. These AI agents—autonomous or semi-autonomous systems capable of managing numerous tasks with minimal human intervention—might not just assist but potentially replace human personnel in some roles.

The blog’s most forward-looking claim, however, veered into discussions of superintelligence. Altman expressed aspirations to advance beyond AGI, envisioning superintelligent systems that could revolutionize scientific breakthroughs and global prosperity. Acknowledging the ambitious nature of these objectives, Altman said, “This sounds like science fiction right now… but we’ve been there before, and we’re OK with being there again.”

Echoing these sentiments, Joshua Achiam, OpenAI’s head of mission alignment, outlined on X (formerly Twitter) the sweeping societal changes AI could trigger. He pointed to disruptions in economics, politics, and technological progression, emphasizing the urgency for institutions and governments to adapt to this rapid evolution. His posts underscored the transformative potential of AI in altering industries and individual dependencies.

Not everyone shares this enthusiasm. While some, like McKay Wrigley of Takeoff AI, cheer OpenAI’s aggressive timeline, others critique its feasibility. AI skeptic Gary Marcus questioned the scalability of OpenAI’s progress, warning of diminishing returns in language model advancements. Meanwhile, public voices like Benjamin Riley and Ed Zitron urged caution, likening OpenAI’s trajectory to previous corporate excesses or warning against treating every proclamation from its leaders as gospel.

The polarization in reactions reflects the monumental scope and complexity of AI development. As 2025 unfolds, the industry and society alike brace for seismic shifts sparked by emerging AI technologies—whether it be AGI, AI integrations, or further progress toward superintelligence. For now, what remains clear is that OpenAI has no intention of adhering to a “normal” trajectory, as it pioneers this ambitious technological frontier.
